What Is Deep Tissue Massage and How Can It Help You?
This hands-on technique uses slow, focused pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, and it's one of the most effective ways to work through chronic tension, tight shoulders, or a lower back that never quite loosens up. You do not need a referral to book a session.
At Spinal Solutions Chiropractic Clinic, our Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) have been practising for close to 26 years and treat patients across St. John's, Paradise, Mount Pearl, and Conception Bay South. Direct billing is available for most extended health insurance plans.
When Muscle Tension Doesn't Just Go Away
Some tightness responds to rest. Chronic tension does not. It might show up as a knot between your shoulder blades that never fully releases, a lower back that stays stiff no matter how much you stretch, or headaches that seem to start at the base of your skull. Sitting at a desk all day, repetitive movement at work, or an old injury that never fully resolved can all leave muscle tissue in a constant state of guarding.
Over time, that guarding becomes the new normal. You stop noticing how much tension you are carrying until a massage therapist presses into it and you realize how long it has been there. A lighter, relaxation-focused massage can help you unwind, but it does not always reach the layer where that tension actually lives.
This is where deeper, more targeted work comes in. It is not about relaxation for its own sake. It is about changing what is happening underneath the surface.
What Makes Deep Tissue Massage Different From a Relaxation Massage?
Swedish or relaxation massage uses lighter, flowing strokes across the surface of the muscle. Deep tissue massage goes further. Your RMT applies slower, more concentrated pressure to reach the deeper muscle fibres and the fascia surrounding them, targeting the specific areas where tension has built up rather than smoothing over the whole body.
This approach works well for:
- Chronic tightness in the neck, shoulders, or lower back
- Postural strain from desk work or repetitive movement
- Restricted range of motion in a joint or muscle group
- Recovery from an old injury or motor vehicle accident
- Muscle knots that do not respond to lighter pressure
This type of work can feel more intense than a relaxation session, especially over areas that are already tight or sensitive. Your RMT will always work within your comfort level and adjust pressure as needed throughout the session.
How Our RMTs Approach Deep Tissue Massage
Our Registered Massage Therapists bring decades of combined experience, with each RMT offering their own areas of expertise. Holly Guiney RMT uses deep tissue, myofascial release and neuromuscular techniques, with additional experience treating TMJ and jaw tension. Holly Hemmeon RMT, who has been with Spinal Solutions since 2010, works with work injuries, repetitive strain and motor vehicle injuries using deep tissue, cupping, trigger point release and myofascial therapy. Pamela Frampton RMT, a massage therapist since 1998, specializes in chronic pain and acute injuries.
Every session starts with a short assessment to understand what is driving your tension, whether that's an old injury, repetitive strain, or compensation for pain elsewhere. Your RMT then tailors the treatment using the techniques most appropriate for your needs. When helpful, they can also coordinate care with our chiropractors or acupuncturist.
You will never be pushed into a package or treatment plan. Your RMT will make recommendations, and the decision is yours.

Benefits Patients Notice After Deep Tissue Massage At Our St. John's Clinic
This type of massage is not just about the hour on the table. Here is what patients consistently report:
- Reduced chronic tension. Areas that stayed tight through stretching and rest start to release.
- Improved range of motion. Stiff shoulders, hips, and necks move more freely between sessions.
- Better sleep. Chronic tightness that disrupts sleep tends to ease as tension comes down.
- Fewer headaches. Tension through the neck and upper back is a common headache trigger, and releasing it often brings relief.
- Faster recovery from strain injuries. Whether from work, sport, or daily repetitive movement, this hands-on care supports healing rather than just masking discomfort.
Frequently Asked Questions About Deep Tissue Massage
This type of massage is more intense than a relaxation session, especially over areas that are already tight, but it should never be unbearable. Your RMT works within your comfort level and will adjust pressure any time you ask. Some mild soreness for a day or two afterward is normal, similar to how muscles feel after a good workout.
Regular relaxation massage uses lighter strokes to help you unwind. This approach applies slower, more concentrated pressure to reach the deeper muscle layers and fascia, and it is aimed at resolving chronic tension rather than general relaxation. Your RMT will recommend the right approach after your assessment.
It depends on how long the tension has been building and what is causing it. Some patients feel real relief after one or two sessions, while chronic cases tied to years of postural strain or an old injury usually need a short series of visits. Your RMT will give you a realistic estimate after your first assessment.
No referral is needed to book a massage therapy appointment at Spinal Solutions. Direct billing is available for most extended health insurance plans. Our RMTs do not currently bill Workers Compensation Board (WCB) directly, so speak with our team if you have questions about your coverage.
Yes, for motor vehicle accidents. Our RMTs regularly treat soft tissue injuries and muscle guarding following an MVA, and direct billing is available for many insurance and MVA plans. Massage is not currently billed directly to WCB for workplace injuries, so we recommend confirming your coverage with your insurer before booking.
